Collaborating on a research topic of long-standing common interest, Dr. Richard Shafer and Dr. Slavka Antonova published an article in the last issue of the journal Central Asia and the Caucasus (Vol. 11, Issue 4. Dec. 2010). The article “Two Decades of Repression: The Persistence of Authoritarian Controls on the Mass Media in Central Asia” was written with Eric Freedman of Michigan State University, and was also published in the Russian edition of the journal.
With a sustained research interest in journalism, media, and democracy in the countries in Eastern Europe, Antonova and Shafer also co-authored a paper “From Journalism Education to Media Education in Russia: Contemporary trends in historical context”, which was presented at the International Association of Media and Communication Researcher (IAMCR) Annual Conference in Braga, Portugal in July 2010.
